WE’RE HAVING A HEAT WAVE!!!
From the looks of the map I keep seeing on the Weather
Channel, it’s HOT everywhere. I’ve mentioned before that my
Yorkie Rylie thinks she’s a Labrador and loves to be
outside, while her big sister Ellie is well aware of her
status as a Princess and probably wishes I had litter
trained her so she would never have to leave the house.
Well, either way, if you have an outside dog, a dog that
prefers to be outside, or even if you find yourself taking
your pet along with you on car trips or vacation, here are
some things to remember about keeping them cool during
these hot summer months:

Give your dog a haircut - Don’t shave them down, but a
close trim will help them to keep cool. You can find lots
of great clippers and trimmers on our grooming products
page -

If at all possible, keep pets inside in the air
conditioning, but if you can’t do that and you have a dog
that likes water more than my Yorkies, try putting a
“kiddie pool” outside. JUST be sure it’s enough water to
play and splash around in, but not too deep. The water
level should never be over your dog’s head. If nothing
else, turn on the sprinkler and let your dog run around
like we used to when we were kids.

Don’t overdo it. If you want to go for a walk or play a
game of fetch, try to do it early in the morning or late in
the evening, and make the walks and the playtime shorter
than usual. Another thing to remember is that the sidewalk
and street might be hot, so check it with your palm to make
sure it’s okay for your pet to walk on. Better still, just
get them a pet carrier or tote and let them ride along
without overheating, while you exercise -

Pay attention to the heat index. The temperature might read
80, while it feels like 95, and since your dog can’t sweat,
that extra humidity can wear them down. Outside dogs need
shelter or shade and plenty of fresh water. Speaking of a
heat index, the temperature in your car can shoot up to 120
in the time it takes you to run in the store for a gallon
of milk and a loaf of bread. Don’t leave a dog unattended
in the car. And by all means, if you are going for a car
ride, you MUST have protective eyewear like a fashionable
pair of Doggles -

A dog's normal body temperature is between 100 and 102.5
degrees, and when it gets above 106, they can’t cool
themselves down and it’s time to seek medical attention. To
cool your dog down, put them in front of a fan and give
them water that is at room temperature, rather than cold,
and get them to a Vet right away.

Always remember, the BEST way to keep your dog cool is, of
course, ICE CREAM. Here’s a recipe:

ICE CREAM FOR CANINES

24 oz. low-fat vanilla yogurt (not frozen yogurt, regular
yogurt)
1 – 3 bananas
1/3 cup of water

Put all ingredients in blender & liquefy. Pour equal
amounts into 4 oz. PAPER cups. Place in freezer over night.
Makes 8 – 9 servings.

that’s a shame because we have some really cool stuff that

all eye catchers, but we also have quite a nice selection
of collars. And by nice selection I mean a HUGE selection

DOGS WHO CARE
We found a cool website (started by a Yorkie) where they
are selling message collars, much like the message
bracelets you see everyone wearing. The collars read “Dogs
Who Care” and all the proceeds go to help children and pets
in need following disasters such as Hurricane Katrina and
the Tsunami from a few years ago. The collars can also be
worn by people as bracelets. Check them out -

QUOTABLE QUOTES
If you think dogs can't count, try putting three dog
biscuits in your pocket and then give him only two of them

WE WANT YOUR STORY
If you subscribe to the Little Shop News and you shop at
the Little Shop of Terrors, then you MUST have a little
terror of your own, right? And if you are like every other
Terror Wrangler we know, then you must have a story or two
that others might find humorous, or at the very least a
story that will make others realize maybe THEIR terror
isn’t as bad as YOUR terror and they’ll feel sorry for you.
Heck, maybe it wasn’t even a BAD thing your terror did;
maybe it was a cute thing. We don’t know, but we’d sure
like to hear about it.

Here’s a chance for your little terror to be famous. Please
send us a story or two, tell us what makes your dog a
“terror” and we’ll print a new story each month in the
newsletter. Email - info@littleshopofterrors.citymax.com
