December Little Shop News

Welcome to the December 2006 edition of LITTLE SHOP NEWS

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
Happy Holidays indeed, and welcome to winter. The weather
here in the Midwest has been crazy. I was wearing shorts
two days ago when I took Ellie and Rylie for a walk, and
today my backyard is covered in ice, the temperature is 27
and I have two Yorkies who can’t be convinced to go out and
do their “business” no matter how many treats I offer. I
guess it’s time to dig out the snow boots and shovel,
because if you have read this newsletter in the past, you
know I will have to shovel a spot beside the deck in the
backyard, and then carry them out there. Good thing I have
my Designer Yorkie sweatshirt to keep me warm. Where did I
get it? Funny you should ask…we have All Breed sweatshirts,
hats and tee shirts at
http://www.littleshopofterrors.citymax.com/page/page/404454.htm
Shameless plug? Indeed, but we really do have some cool
clothing. Check it out!

What’s funny is I remember a time when Ellie liked the
snow, or at least tolerated it. We brought her home the day
after Thanksgiving a few years ago, and so she was potty
trained during the cold months and we took many treks out
in the freezing weather at 2 a.m. There was a big snowstorm
that winter and she and I went out one day and built a
snowman, snowwoman and snow dog. I took pictures of her
running around, sniffing and thrashing in the snow. She was
covered, but seemed to enjoy this crazy new fluffy stuff.
When my wife came home we surprised her with our little
snow family and Ellie posed sitting next to her frozen
likeness. Those days are gone. Now when I open the back
door after a snowstorm, or even if it’s a bit chilly, she
stands back about 5 feet from the door and just sniffs
towards the outdoors, then looks at me as if to say, “You
are kidding, right?” Ah well, I guess I can’t blame her,
since I don’t exactly enjoy spending as much time in the
snow as I did when was a kid. I guess neither of us is as
enamored with the fluffy white stuff as we once were.

Whether you get out in the snow to play with your dogs, or
you are just out shoveling a spot so they can do their
business without freezing their rears off, enjoy the winter
wonderland this season.

COLD WEATHER PET TIPS
Okay, since it IS getting COLD outside, we decided to pass
along a few tips, courtesy of the ASPCA. Most importantly,
you should know that pets are just as susceptible to the
adverse effects of cold weather as we are, and their fur is
not enough to keep them adequately protected during the
winter months.

Be sure to keep cats inside. Cats can easily freeze
outside. (Yes, dogs think this is a good thing, but many
cat lovers would disagree.)

Dogs should be leashed. A dog’s strongest attribute is
their sense of smell, and this can be easily lost in a
snowstorm. Once their sense of smell is lost, so is the
dog. The ASPCA reports that more dogs are found lost during
the winter months than any other season.

Wipe your cat or dog down when they come in from snow,
sleet or ice. Pets can easily ingest salt, antifreeze or
other chemicals used during the winter months, simply by
stepping in them and then licking their paws. Be sure to
wipe any residue from their paws.

Don’t leave pets alone in the car. Cars can turn into
freezers awfully quickly in the wintertime, so leaving your
pet in the car while it’s cold outside can be a potentially
fatal mistake.

Be especially careful with puppies or older dogs, as both
have a lower tolerance for cold weather. It can be
difficult to housebreak a puppy during the winter months.
If your puppy seems overly sensitive to the cold weather,
paper training inside might be the best bet.

Give your pet a warm retreat. Animals need a warm place to
sleep in cold weather – a covered place where they can
escape the cold and wind. Make sure your pet doesn’t sleep
on a cold floor or anywhere drafty. If you have an
“outside” dog, be sure they have a shelter and blankets he
can snuggle into. If possible, let him sleep in the garage,
shed or basement when weather is especially brutal.

SWEET DREAMS
If your pets are usually outside in the summer, but you are
bringing them in for the winter, they will sure appreciate
a comfy place to cuddle up and stay warm. We have Pet Beds
in all shapes and sizes, and even the new hideaway “Murphy
Bed,” if you’d like something stylish and space-saving.
