We have the best luck in housetraining when using an ex pen in the home. I set the ex pen up small at first and line the entire bottom with potty pads, and then put a couple of sherpa nap mats at one end, food and water in a corner of its own. That way they HAVE to either use the potty pads or the sherpa nap mats if they choose to potty. 99% of the time they choose the potty pads! As your baby gets older and wiser you can open the expen more if you choose, and only put down one potty pad and still have success! If you want to train to outdoors, just take them out of the ex pen when you first arrive home, and after every nap (which is taken in the expen). And again about every 2-3 hours. By keeping your dog in the ex pen while you are away, accidents will happen on the potty pad. Even when training outdoors, I always keep a pad on the floor inside in a corner too, even when they are older...not that I really want my dogs to use it, (I would rather they go outside,) but it is better than using the carpet while we are away! Many outside trained dogs will use the pad if it is their only choice and they were started in a lined expen.
This is the method of house training that works best for us with our toy breeds. They will usually catch on quickly to either outdoor training or indoor potty pad use. We go with what their actions tell us is the favorite house training method for them.
Caution: Owners that use indoor only house training methods should be aware that it may take longer than outdoor training. However in the winter time and during rain and stormy weather, we find the opposite to be true. Some dogs will resist potty pad training and may not go to the right spot every time indoors. And once a dog learns to go indoors on potty pads, it can be difficult to train them to go outside at a later time.
